Absolutely NO cell phones!

As a preamble to this paper, perhaps it would make sense to summarize the topic at hand. It is not just cell phone use that is “up for grabs” in this discussion, but in general, items that can both be distracting and informative at the same time. For example: computer use in a classroom. I have had professors who have banned their use because it was distracting to them, although a computer is ideal for researching topics. In addition, one can argue that reading class material from a book during class can be both distracting to the teacher as well as informative for the student.
It can be argued that the use of cell phones are detrimental for other reasons as well. Quoting from http://www.ehow.com/list_7176253_negative-effects-cell-phones-education.html: “According to the National School Safety and Security Services, text messaging can be an aid for cheating students. Also, the camera in a cell phone can be used to photograph exams. The camera also can be used to photograph other students in a way that is a violation of privacy”. For these reasons as well as the distraction component, it would seem that the negatives of cell phone use far outweigh the benefits.
However, the argument that cell phone usage is beneficial for the usage of research is a valid argument as well. It is an important tool in the tools of the teaching trade and greatly enhances the educational experience of the student.
In summation, there are definitely pros and cons to cell phone usage in the classroom. As a rule, it can be used with the proper guards attached. As an example, I take a Biology class on my computer. As a way to prevent cheating and looking up answers on the internet during an exam, there is a special program called Examguard that doesn’t allow searches during the quiz. If such technology is put in place with cell phone usage, then I believe cell phones can truly be a benefit.
